What could possibly go wrong? The Facebook edition

March 14th, 2009 by michaelw in Uncategorized

I previously wrote about why not everything I want to say will make it onto this blog. The Internet is forever. You can’t take it back and you can be sure that someone will interpret it in the worst possible way with the worst possible timing.

With Facebook (or any social network) the problem gets worse. Facebook has a stated goal to monetize my activity on their site. How could that possibly work out in my favour?

I have a Facebook account. I use it sparingly. I occasionally post on someone’s wall or use the build-in messaging system. I never accept invitations to applications, groups, fans, etc.

Facebook has repeatedly tried to change their terms of use to allow them broader and more powerful ways of monetizing their users activity. The funny thing is, when you’re a monopoly (or even leader), the rules change. How long before Facebook’s consent decree? I’d say it’s probably less than 5 years away unless their power is diminished.
